North Metropolitan TAFE Fitout

Service: Design

Key Project Elements

  • Project delivered during COVID within program to accommodate the staff and student relocation prior to Semester.
  • New power, communications, water, waste, gas, compressed air, and vacuum systems coordinated and provided to ensure training and equipment requirements were met.

Project Overview

TAFE wanted to relocate their existing Dental Training facilities at Nedlands to their own TAFE buildings in Leederville.

The existing building was previously used as offices and lecture rooms, which were all gutted to create the new training centre.

The fitout included:

  • Ten dental chairs in two separate practical clinics on either side of a sterilisation room.
  • Two dental labs with bunsen burners, grinding facilities and dust extraction.
  • Radiography / X-Ray room.
  • Trimming / polishing room, plaster room and CAD/CAM rooms.
  • Packing / curing / boiling room.
  • Burnout & casting room.
  • Crown / bridge room.

The project involved the following key items:

  • New switchboards and body protected circuits.
  • New ceilings with new LED lighting, diffusion, and other ceiling services.
  • New Fume cupboard exhaust, smoke and steam extract exhaust.
  • New compressed air and vacuum systems and reticulation.
  • New gas services incoming and reticulation.
  • Extensive new drainage including localised plaster traps.
  • New hot water system and ring main, RO water supply.

Our Approach

This project involved highly technical aspects that had to be extracted from Lecturers and TAFE staff who were largely unfamiliar with construction and fit outs.  Extensive coordination sessions between the design team and these staff were carried through the design process as well as during construction to ensure that the result was in line with TAFE’s requirements and expectations.

The project was also conducted during the COVID period and our liaison with suppliers and contractors ensured that equipment and delivery met the required construction program.

The Benefits

We delivered this highly technical project largely during a pandemic within program for the staff and students to relocate and commence training at the second semester of 2023.

We collaborated closely with the lecturers, TAFE management, facilities manager, project manager, architects and contractors to ensure that the services requirements associated with the Dental Training facility were provided to the expected requirements.

The builder was chosen as finalist in the 2023 Master Builders Western Australia (MBAWA) Excellence in Construction Awards.
